The current situation

Commerce is one of the largest and most important sectors in Germany. Technological development has seen commerce undergo profound change over the last 10 years, with almost 50% of mail-order business now done via the internet. The German Retail Federation (HDE) put e-commerce sales (B2C) in 2010 at nearly 24 billion Euros. Unfortunately, smaller retailers in town centres are suffering as a result of this boom, with some only able to survive by going into cooperation with larger retail partners or selling services. In the case of wholesalers, the challenge is to face up to competition from virtual outlets and take advantage of the opportunities presented by e-commerce.
